Professional Photography

By now you’ve seen the stunning drawing of my family by my (then) six-year-old Daniel.  At the time that was the only current picture I was in with my children, so I decided to invest in professional photography engaging a colleague to photograph me with my babies.  Jen Maunder is a country Victorian photographer whose style I love.  At the time she was just about to move from Queensland, so I booked a session with her before she left.

As a photographer myself and a self-conscious, tubby mum, I am much happier behind the camera than in front of it.  I am really critical of photographs of myself and I never used to like being in them.  I still don’t like being in photographs, but I now understand why it is so important.

These photographs are not for me.

Now, that’s really important, so I’ll say it again…  these photographs are NOT for me.

It is the hope of every parent that your children and their children will out-live you.  These photographs are for them.  They are the proof you not only existed, but you were present with them in their childhood and important moments of their lives.  These photographs are the way your loved-ones see you – not the controlled selfie, but the uncontrolled laughter, double-chins, funny faces and the relaxed, settled silences snuggled up on the couch when your guard is down.  This is how you look to your loved-ones and this is how they’d like to remember you.

As a mum, this is my favourite photograph from Jen’s session.

Christopher (14), James (7), Amelia (15), Daniel (6) and Nicholas (12)

Yes, the shoot was fun plus hard work.  Because I know how I photograph families, I worked hard on just stepping back and letting Jen do her thing – even when they weren’t all behaving as I would have liked.  Jen works with kids and families and has her own way of getting the professional photography she is looking for.  I put my trust in her as a photographer.

“But you’re not in it!” I hear you say…

There I am.  With my loves, as they know me – calm, easy-going, happy to be snuggling with them.

Are you in your photographs?

After photographing all the children, with and without me, Jen separated me from the folds and took a few photographs of me on my own.  THIS I really struggle with.  I didn’t want to see these particular photographs when my session was ready to be proofed.  Amongst others, Jen captured this one.

When I look at this photo I see a horse-mouthed, tired, puffy-faced, did I mention tired(?) woman who can barely open her eyes.  It’s not about me, though.  This photograph of me – a divorced, single mother of five, running her own businesses, paying a mortgage and trying to create a life to remember for her children – is not about me.  It’s not even for me.  Remember….  I said that a few times before?

This is the face my loved-ones see.  This is my unguarded smile (which looks like I’m planning to bit small children).  Those are my lines and wrinkles from laughing so often.  Yes, it’s true I’m tired, but that’s only for now…  soon enough these amazing young people will be grown up and my business will be looking after itself and I can rest.  For now, this is me.

Please make sure you have photographs of you.  You on your own and you with your family.

Speaking of family, here are some of my favourites from Jen Maunder‘s photography session with my family.

Sara’s Story

When looking for information to share on the blog, I realised I’ve been through so much of it already – hence ‘Sara’s Story’.  To keep it real, I’m going to tap into my many years of experiences around marriage, raising five amazing children, divorce and building a life for my family.  Sassi Photography has been a part of my life since 2004, firstly as a small at-home business, then a small boutique studio at Camp Hill, then back home again and now as a full professional photography studio at East Brisbane.  These posts, however, are about my family and I.

Let me introduce you…

My family, as drawn by my youngest, Daniel, when he was six.  The tall kid on the left is Christopher.  He’s my 6’4″ fourteen year old who loves playing football and basketball, is a whiz on the computer and is great at doing his household jobs when he is asked.  Next is Amelia, who is my eldest at fifteen.  In three months she will be able to get her driver’s learners.  She’s keenly fit and loves all things exercise and independence.

The kid with the spiky hair is a self-portrait of Daniel.  Daniel’s now seven and loves anything on a screen, playing make-believe and coco-pops.  The pretty lady with the gorgeous lashes is me – the Mum of these awesome, leanly-drawn kidlets.  My twelve year old Nicholas is next.  He’s my arty boy who loves drawing, creating, computer programming and, sometimes, cricket.  The smile-less boy next to him is James, eight.  James shares a room with Daniel and I guess Daniel was over James the day he drew this.  James is a keen reader and likes to play sport, Pokemon and help out at home, especially with the dishwasher.

So, this is us.  These are my gorgeous children.  You’ll get to know them more as I blog more about having babies, life and love.

Saberina won our Mummy Tree Markets competition for a $1500 Gift Certificate and we were so excited to see her win it!  Sabrina and her gorgeous young man have been through some sad times with the loss of a loved-one and she really wanted to celebrate that this is her family now – the two of them.  Boy, do they have some fun together!!!

Saberina now has an amazing five-piece canvas set hanging in her home to look at every day!

There’s something about having three boys in the family, growing up together and being, well, boys!  Effie’s boys were delightful to meet and have in the studio.  Boys keep any parent on their toes with their adventure, humour, silliness and rough play.  They are also so full of love and happy to snuggle and think the world of their Mum and Dad.  Kon and Peter clearly think the world of their new baby brother Elias, too.

Because ALL the family is important, when Alana talked to us about her maternity photography session and mentioned she’d like to include her dogs we were SO excited!!  Alana and John arrived with Brutis (the Pug) and Hooch (the French Mastiff) and it was clear these are two very loved pooches.

Seriously, these two could not be more excited about the baby coming along!!  😉

This snuggly photograph with Alana surrounded by her loves is my absolute favourite from the session.  Hooch was so warn out from the excitement and very happy to snuggle in.  Brutis still had a little more energy but stopped just long enough to catch this.

43 Newborns

2016 has been an amazing year at Sassi Photography.  Not only did we move into our new premises at Brisbane Photography Studios and basically start the business again from scratch, we also met over 80 families in the studio and photographed a gorgeous 43 newborns.

Anyone who has met Sara knows she just falls in love with every baby she encounters.  To be able to capture the joy of a new member of the family and photograph newborns is a gift.  Some of the babies we welcomed were Finn, Cohen, Alexandra, Summer, Stella, Reid, Noah, Aydhan, Leo, Skye, Sophie, Mialy, Millie, Jonathan, Eli, Roy, Maple, Paisley, Taylor, Rudransh, Louie, Zalia, Sebastian, Eva, Ezekiel, Henry, Aaliyah, Mason, Maxwell and Evelyn.  Each precious bundle came with their own personality, family traditions and style.  Some cried through most of the photography experience whilst others slept.  We had lots of little smiles and even more wee and mess!  We loved every second of it and can’t wait to meet all the new babies in 2017!

Thank you for a wonderful year!  Without our amazing clients, friends and colleagues we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. Best wishes for a happy and prosperous 2017!
